Ice Bucket, Rice Bucket and the My Tree Challenge

Inspired by the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge the idea for the Rice Bucket Challenge attributed to Manju Latha Kalanidhi, a 38-year-old journalist based in Hyderabad originated. She considered the Ice Bucket Challenge artificial and wasteful of water, and came up with the Rice Bucket Challenge as a less wasteful alternative that would help local communities. It started off as a FB page on August 23, 2014, and within a day, the page had 7000 likes and spread to other South Asian nations.
Close on the heels of this came up The My Tree Challenge, an activity involving planting a sapling and challenging others to do so. The challenge was launched first in Kerala to promote the preservation of nature.
My Tree Challenge was founded by Mammootty, an award winning Indian film actor along with Abdul Manaf, CEO of Easysoft Technologies, and Imthias Kadeer, a travel photographer who also started the campaign Shades of Life, an endeavor to promote afforestation.
Mammootty started the campaign on 30 August 2014 by planting the first tree and challenging Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan and Tamil superstars Vijay and Suriya to do the same. The challenge is being taken up and reciprocated with equal enthusiasm by the tinsel world across the Nation. Now, Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu has taken up the challenge and nominated Mohanlal and Hrithik Roshan in turn to follow suit.
Let us dream to get a total green cover roofing the earth we live in and let all corporates, social and political entities come together to carry forward this worthwhile dream.
